UN International Day of Forests – 21st March
The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 March the International Day of Forests in 2012 to celebrate and raise awareness for the importance of all types of forests. Countries everywhere are encouraged to undertake local, national and international efforts to organise activities involving forests and trees, such as tree planting campaigns.
As part of our own corporate ESG initiative in 2022, #StartSomethingGood, our teams are already making more than a commitment. On Friday 18th March, and in readiness for the UN’s International Day of Forests, our teams undertook the first of our own tree planting campaign. With our move to hybrid working and reduction in energy usage, we’re heavily focused on achieving real carbon neutrality. Rather than simply donating to organisations to plant trees on our behalf, our teams wanted more involvement with the process. On that basis, finding the right location to plant was key. We discovered a site in East Sussex where 3000 single species trees were diseased and required to be removed via a DEFRA order. Following specialist advice from English Woodlands, we decided to plant locally relevant, mixed native species – 1,000 of them, to be precise, as part of our first initiative. Planting 500 trees on the first day, Friday 18th March, was backbreaking but rewarding, boosted by glorious sunshine – labours not to be missed. We have to say a special thank you to Diana and John Mactear for their hospitality and getting us safely there and back.
This native tree planting initiative is also important in getting our teams who have been working tirelessly for our clients over the last couple of years in lockdowns, out and away from the screens, campaigns, Zoom and Teams calls and into woodland and forests. The vital spaces offer us more than the air we breathe, they enable us to truly ‘breathe’ and recognise the importance of the environment, how much more they do for us, and why we should be doing so much more for them, for now and all our futures. It was a trigger moment – recognition that we’re no longer a small business, but instead are growing fast into a much bigger agency, with lots of wonderful people, from all over the world, being part of the team. With this comes a bigger footprint and thus greater responsibilities. It’s precisely because of this that we realised we needed to make a change.
